Easy Firefox Searches
February 1, 2005
If you use Firefox, you probably use the Google search bar in the upper right corner of the browser window, and you probably know that you can click on the G to choose another search engine to search with. You may even have selected “Add Engines” from the list and added another search engine, like maybe IMDB. What I recently learned from Russell, though, is that adding search engines is unnecessary. There’s an easier way to do it, built right into Firefox 1.0.
It’s called smart keywords. They enable you to do the searches directly from the browser location bar, and setup is very easy. For example, I can type “imdb shrek” in my location bar and it’ll go directly to the search results for Shrek on IMDB for me. It even works for the wubi.org proxy! Nice. One note that the article doesn’t make too clear: You need to right-click inside the search box you’re targeting to get Firefox’s “Add a Keyword for this Search” option.
