The Fall
October 1, 2008
Yesterday I watched a movie called The Fall. It was really great, and I think my family would enjoy it, Amy and Mom in particular. One of the reasons I think they’d like it is because it has so many similarities to family favorite The Princess Bride.
Here are some of the similarities:
- Story-within-a-story structure (adult telling story to child)
- Unlikely band of heroes going up against impossible odds
- Characters driven by personal vendettas
- Funny little details (often results of the child audience not understanding something)
- Dramatic rope climbing sequence
But some big differences:
- The Fall is less light-hearted, takes itself more seriously
- Although it’s story-within-a-story, the “outer story” is actually really important, and interacts with the story being told
Anyway, the film uses amazing imagery and bold, beautiful colors. It’s really a visual treat. Definitely one to check out.
