On the way back to Shanghai...

November 25, 2008

ACTFL was pretty cool. I enjoyed talking with lots of teachers. Their passion for education was infectious, and it was good seeing two of my old college teachers: Elinore Fresh (Chinese) and Susan Kubota (Japanese). I hope to go again next year.

So after two days of ACTFL, I had to get up at 5am to start my trek out to Cozumel. I even had close to two hours to kill in Miami, which I spent with Illy. It was great to see her.

Then, after all my flights going flawlessly, on time, etc., the flight that really counted—Miami to Cozumel—was delayed over an hour. I was really counting on that flight to be on time so that I didn’t miss the wedding. It turns out there was an hour of time difference I had not accounted for, and I ended up arriving after the ceremony had begun, but right before the vows. So, all good.

The wedding was absolutely gorgeous. The party afterward was awesome.

The next day I sort of hid out a bit rather than socializing… Yeah, I basically did my own thing all day. Got pretty well acquainted with my hammock. I had a two-hour lunch (only partially because of the slow service), enjoying chips with fresh salsa (and I didn’t mind the cilantro!), some kind of delicious fish soup, awesome quesadillas (with guacamole), guacomole and tuna salad, and a burrito. Oh, and wine, and coffee. (Yeah, I pretty much pigged out… the bracelet that came with my room entitled me to as much food and drink as I wanted, any time.) Then I tried the waverunner—that was a blast. Ate dinner with the Quebec gang (friends of the groom). I had a nice day.

That was yesterday. Today I slept in, had some nice huevos rancheros, and then had to get out of there.

Had two decent Spanish conversations with Mexicans: one with my taxi driver to the airport, and the other with one of the gift shop ladies in the airport. The driver betrayed my friendship by ripping me off on the taxi fare, and I betrayed the gift shop lady by not buying any of her over-priced merchandise ($100 for a scarf!). C’est la vie…

I paid $8 for all-night wifi here in the Atlanta airport instead of getting a hotel. Only 8 more hours to go…
