On Raisins
June 26, 2014
I recently bought a bag of little boxes of Sunmaid Rasins for Alana. SS was saying how she first discovered that brand as a child when a relative brought some of those “imported raisins” from Taiwan. She finds them a bit sweet, but found the image on the box unforgettable. I, meanwhile, have not given a thought to those raisins for years, but now that I have a daughter the right age to appreciate raisins, when I saw the Sunmaid girl in the grocery store, I had to buy some for Alana. Powerful branding!
Anyway…
Alana was eating some Sunmaid raisins on the couch, between SS and me, and we had this conversation:
Alana: Daddy, do you like rasisins?
Me: Yes, I do. Do you like raisins?
Alana: Yeah, I like raisins. Mommy, do you like raisins?
SS: I don’t like raisins…
Alana: Mommy doesn’t like raisins.
SS: Let me finish. I don’t like this kind of raisins. They’re too sweet.
Alana: Are you finished?
Oh, the sass! I love it.
A couple of weeks ago we had this conversation (bracketed parts were in Chinese):
SS: [Alana, don’t take a bite of the cherry and put it back in the bowl.]
Alana: … (Ignoring her)
SS: [Alana, are you listening to me?]
Alana: [My ears broke.]
Me: Alana, did you hear what Mommy is saying to you?
Alana: What? Zing! She’s good. (It’s hard to tell if this is intentional or random, actually…)
