a little note for you, so you see / when I'm gone, I never go too far

2 nights of dreams

June 26, 2010

Last night I had multiple dreams, but I got up early in the morning to go to the bathroom (and I could still remember them then), but when I woke up again they were totally gone. Need to be more vigilant in recalling and recording my dreams!

The night before last was better. I feel like I had multiple dreams, but there’s one I can still recall pretty vividly.

In that dream, it was like I was playing Grand Theft Auto IV (the PS3 game I’ve been playing most recently), except the character was a young black guy, and everything in the game was real. It just felt like GTA4 because I knew I had to do certain things and “get past certain parts,” and the camera followed the black guy the same way the game does. So I “was” the black guy in that I was controlling him like I would a game character.

Anyway, in this game I was approaching a high school or something, and I came to a bridge where this gangster black guy had a gun and he was threatening a huge group of people. He was going to give everyone a gun, split them into two teams, and force them to fight each other to the death. (Stupid, huh? If he gave everyone a gun, why wouldn’t they just turn on him?)

I didn’t want to be a part of that, so I jumped over the bridge, swam to the bank, and tried to run away. I came to a fence, and that’s when I realized the gangster had sounded the alarm. Something like 12 rottweilers had been sicced on me. As the dogs closed in on my character I freaked out and the dream ended.

If I have more video game-like dreams, I think it’ll be easier to make the transition to lucid dreaming. After all, you’re not really afraid of dying in games, and you can control the action (at an extent). Especially in GTA4, you frequently do things just to see what happens, which seems well-suited to dream experiments.

Anyway, I’m pretty pleased with how the dreaming is going the past few nights:

  1. Night 1: didn’t recall dreams at all
  2. Night 2: knew I dreamed, but could recall nothing
  3. Night 3: recalled some of my dream
  4. Night 4: recalled a good portion of the dream (the GTA4 dream above)
  5. Night 5 (last night): would have recalled dreams if I had tried when I first woke up
